In 2010, Dario Franchitti continues with Target Chip Ganassi Racing. 2009 brought a return to the IndyCar Series for Dario Franchitti, and the Series championship, with five victories during the season. Franchitti clinched the title over teammate Scott Dixon in the final race of the season. In the off-season, Franchitti competed in the Rolex 24 of Daytona, paired with Dixon.
2008 saw the driver pursue a career in NASCAR, competing in the Nationwide and Sprint Cup Series for Ganassi. That off-season also found Franchitti in the Grand Am Rolex 24 Hours at Daytona in the 01 car with Ganassi teammates, Scott Dixon and Alex Lloyd. The team placed fifth overall for the event.
Although he is of Italian descent, Dario Franchitti was born and raised in Scotland. Dario started in kart , and at 11 years old, he won the Scottish Junior Championship. He followed that up with a British Junior Championship in 1985 and 1986. In 1988, Dario won the Scottish Senior Title. In 1992, he joined Paul Stewart Racing and was named the McLaren/Autosport Young Driver of the Year. After winning the championship in 1993, Dario moved up and won the British Formula Three Championship in 1994.
Dario continued to race in Europe, where he was sponsored by AMG Racing until 1996, when Dario progressed to Champ Car racing in the US. After starting off with Hogan Racing, he switched to Team KOOL Green in 1998. In two seasons with Team KOOL Green, he won six races and seven poles. Dario joined the Andretti Green team in the IndyCar Series in 2003. While his first few years were hindered by injury, he still was able to capture a couple of victories in 2004. In May 2007, Dario's career reached an all-time high as he took not only a victory in the Indy 500, but nabbed the 2007 IndyCar Series championship in a nail-biter a Chicagoland.On the personal side, Franchitti is a licensed helicopter pilot; married to actress Ashley Judd, and his brother Marino competes in the American Le Mans Series.
